SUBJECT: GAMES OF TEXAS & BCI BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
BACKGROUND:
The cities of Bedford, Colleyville, Euless, Grapevine, Hurst and North Richland Hills are
hosts of the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Games of Texas for 2003 and 2004. The
Games will be held the weekend of July 25-27, 2003 and July 23-25, 2004. The Games
of Texas is patterned after the international Olympic Games competition (see attached
information). Events will be held in each of the host cities. An update on plans for the
weekend competition will be presented along with a promotional video, Staff will also pass
on information on the Kick-off Gala scheduled for Thursday, August 22, 2002.
The BCI Basketball Tournament is currently underway in Grapevine and most of the
gymnasiums in the city are being utilized for the tournament. Staff will update the Council
on the number of teams participating in the tournament and estimated revenue generated
from the tournament.

The Event:
The GAMES OF TEXAS is the ultimate sports festival for Texas amateur athletes.
n First held in 1986, the GAMES OF TEXAS is patterned after the Olympic dames and the
U.S. Olympic Sports Festivals. The, the GALES OF TEXAS provides a forum for
trainingand completion among Texas' Olympic hopefuls and recreational athletes.

Participants' ages range from four to eighty-four! Texas Amateur Athletic Federation
(TAAF) is proud to have been recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as
an official State Games Program Participant every year since 1991.
The Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF)
The Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) is a nonprofit organization established
in 1925 to promote and organize amateur athletics in the state of Texas. The membership
of TAAF is comprised of parks and recreation departments, individuals, and
organizations that contribute, time, energy and effort in this endeavor. TAAF offers
athletic competition for individuals as well as for teams.
The Hosts:
Northeast Tarrant County is recognized as one of the leading park and recreation areas in
all of America. The parks and recreation departments of Medford, Colleyville, Euless,
Grapevine, Hurst, North Richland Hills have teamed up to offer an unparalleled array of
world-class facilities, dedicated volunteers, and award-winning park and recreation
professionals. This unprecedented team effort is destined to be the largest sporting event
in the history of Tarrant County.

Attendance:
Event organizers expect as many as 12,000 athletes and over 23,000 spectators. The
track and field and swimming events alone will play host to over 4,000 athletes. In
addition, over 2,500 volunteers, many from across the state, will lend their talents to the
Games.
Regional Economic Impact
The 35,000 athletes, spectators, event officials and volunteers are expected to generate
over $7,000,000 in direct and indirect economic benefit to Northeast Tarrant County. In
addition, the exposure for the region begins at the 2002 Games in Waco and Northeast
.: Tarrant County will be showcased in virtually every Texas community over the next
three years.
The Events
Participants will be battling for GAWIES OF TEXAS CHAMPIONSHIPS in over 18
sports including: baseball, Bowling, Boxing, Disc Golf, Extreme Frames, ]Fencing, Golf,
Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Judo, Kickball, Indoor Soccer, Outdoor Soccer, Softball,
Tennis, Track and Meld, Swimming, and Sand Volleyball.
Opening Ceremonies
Event organizers are already busy in planning a dynamic opening Ceremony. Slated for
Pennington Stadium, the event will include music, exciting parade of athletes, mystery
