FROM: ROGER NELSON, CITY MANAGER dW
MEETING DATE: JUNE 19, 2001
SUBJECT: IN-LINE HOCKEY RINK IMPROVEMENTS
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends the City Council award a contract to Randall & Blake, Inc. (RBI) in the
amount of $78,695.80 to resurface the in-line hockey rink located behind the Community
Activities Center.
FUNDING SOURCE:
Funds to do this project will come from the following sources.
Account 174-74015-063 — Dove Pool Filters $62,275.80
Account 174-74015-054 — Court Resurfacing 16.420.00
$78,695.80
BACKGROUND:
The in-line rink was constructed in 1996 and the surface is asphalt. The soil beneath the
surface is clay and the expanding/contracting of the soil has created cracks and heaving
of the asphalt surface. The current condition of the surface is dangerous for the
participants in the leagues offered by the Recreation Division.
Staff recommends that the new surface be concrete because it will not heave or crack
like asphalt. The City currently has a contract with Randall & Blake, Inc. (RBI) for
concrete work. The quote from RBI to resurface the in-line rink is less than the contract
price. The work will include sealing the existing cracks in the asphalt, installing steel
rebar on 12" centers and the concrete with fiber mesh included.
To fund this project, staff is recommending the use of Court Resurfacing funds and
funds earmarked for projects which have already been funded through other means.
