HomeMy WebLinkAboutWS Item 02 - Bronto Skylift Ladder TruckK . MEMO TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL FROM: ROGER NELSON, CITY MANAGER MEETING DATE: SEPTEMBER 4, 2001 SUBJECT: WORKSHOP — BRONTO SKYLIFT LADDER TRUCK BACKGROUND: The purchase of a 118 -foot Bronto Skylift from Emergency Vehicles of Texas, Inc., is a necessary apparatus to add to our emergency response fleet. Currently we have a 95 foot platform ladder truck, purchased in 1986, that has met our emergency response needs during the last 15 years. However, new development in Grapevine in the past five years has produced a demand for ever-increasing service levels and a need for specialized equipment and training to serve buildings constructed with the required setbacks from the street and multiple site elevations. The height and reach capabilities of the Bronto Skylift will allow the Fire Department to more effectively respond to emergencies in Grapevine. The Bronto Skylift is capable of reaching over buildings and parapet walls and setting the rescue platform on rooftops or balconies. Deployment time of the stabilizer jacks for this unit is 30 seconds. Our existing ladder requires deployment of four jacks, one at a time and takes just under three minutes. The Bronto Skylift operates from below -grade to 118 feet and flowing 2,000 gallons per minute, has a payload in the rescue platform of 1,000 lbs and has a reach capability of 86 feet. This allows for rescue and removal of multiple victims during emergency operations at hotel and multifamily structures. Our current ladder truck is limited to operating at grade level to 70 feet and flowing 1000 gallons per minute and has limited reach capabilities especially when compared to the reach capabilities of the Bronto Skylift. Should Council agree to this purchase as recommended by City Staff, the existing ladder will be placed in reserve and will assist us in our effort to lower the ISO rate for the City during our inspection in February 2003. No additional personnel will be required to operate this piece of equipment. Chief Anderson will make a presentation at the Council Workshop detailing the features and benefits of the Bronto Skylift.
