SUBJECT: APPROVAL TO RENEW DIABETES REVERSAL PROGRAM FOR
EMPLOYEE BENEFITS
RECOMMENDATION: City Council to consider the renewal of a contract for the diabetes reversal
program with Virta Medical.
FUNDING SOURCE: Funds are available in the General Fund (Risk Department) for an
estimated annual amount of$35,000.
BACKGROUND: Virta Medical delivers sustained Type 2 Diabetes reversal as well as
significant improvements in other chronic metabolic diseases. Virta
provides a program to employees that consists of careful medical
supervision, medication adjustments, day-to-day support, and an
individualized approach to nutrition. The Virta team is made up of
physicians, dieticians, and counselors.
The Virta program has successfully helped employees lower their Alc and
weight. Employees have seen a reduction in the need for medication has
which has created savings in healthcare spending. The City currently
offers four programs with Virta: diabetes reversal, diabetes management,
pre-diabetes reversal, and obesity reversal.
This purchase will be made in accordance with an existing interlocal
agreement with the Region 14 Education Service Center in Texas through
the National Cooperative Purchasing Alliance (NCPA) Program as allowed
by Texas Local Government Code, Chapter 271 and Texas Government
Code, Chapter 791.
Bids were taken by the cooperative and a contract was awarded to Virta
Medical. The Risk and Purchasing staff reviewed the contract for
departmental specification compliance and pricing and determined that
the contract would provide the best service and pricing for meeting the
needs of the City.
