BACKGROUND: National Train Day is being celebrated on May 10, 2008. This date commemorates the day that the Golden Spike was driven, (just 27 years before Puffy was built) at Promontory Summit, Utah joining the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railways, thus starting transcontinental railroad service in America. National Train Day will be promoted throughout the USA with AI Roker as the National spokesman. The Grapevine Vintage Railroad plans include the following: Event Details: Mayor and Council to proclaim May 10t" as National Train Day in Grapevine at May 6tn Council meeting. Grapevine Vintage Railroad plans to celebrate with a mini-train festival in the parking lot with participation from many train related organizations. Activities on the grounds include: • Live music on the flat car • Old west Gunfight (promoting summer train robberies) • Meet and greet with Hobo Bob • Blacksmith demonstration (names stamped on RR spikes for purchase) • Hourly spike driving contests (Lone Star Hi-Railers to operate) • Lone Star Hi-Railers model railway club train layout • Meet and take pictures with GVRR Engine Crew and Conductors • Free Jr. Engineer badges for all kids • Tours of the passenger coaches • Pictures with Puffy (free with own camera or purchase from photographer) • Hourly raffles for cab rides in Puffy, future caboose rides (when restoration is complete), engineer, conductor and train attendant for a day positions) family four packs for summer train rides, and GVRR merchandise
