The committee discussed the following items:
• How to determine adoptability of animals in the care of the shelter. The HSUS
standards on euthanasia was introduced and how the shelter may be able to
benefit from using a similar model.
• New animal management software. The shelter will soon be using PetPoint as a
shelter tool. We will participate in their low-cost microchip program and their gift
of insurance to adopters. It will track animals, owners, records, and statistics far
better than our program now.
• Vaccination and other services for animals. The animals in our care need to
receive care comparable to other shelters. We plan to vaccinate and sterilize
before adoption soon (projected early 2015). The logistics and planning for an
increase in service fees must be arranged for first. We need to do a comparison
(of surrounding shelters/cities) and make a proposal to City Council.
No action was taken by the Committee.

Nancy Snyder received information about a seminar that we may have interest in
hosting in the spring. It focuses on calming animals using touch which can be very
helpful in stressed shelter animals. Kristina Valentine was assigned to investigate the
seminar further and work with the Police Department Training Coordinator on the
matter.
No action was taken by the Committee.
Alan Berning was hired as the third staff person for the shelter. He started at the
beginning of June and will be receiving training for his Basic ACO Certification.

The shelter remodel is nearing completion. The glass walls are installed for the new
adoption visit room, free roaming cat area, and cat adoption area. Painting has been
done along with lighting, ductwork, and flooring. The dog area floor is being refinished
this week and through the weekend. We are making plans to purchase two glass
fronted kennels and furnishings for the cat area. Also, a kennel was purchased to
house up to two small dogs.
An open house will be planned and it was proposed that we should make a presentation
to City Council around the same time regarding Animal Services and who we are/what
we offer.
