Sands and weathered shale were evaluated in -situ utilizing the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) [ASTM 15861 and the TxDOT Cone Penetration Test (CPT). Selected samples were tested to evaluate engineering properties, soil movement, and confirm visual classification. Tests conducted included Atterberg Limits (ASTM D-4318), moisture content determinations (ASTM D-2216), and partial gradations (ASTM D-1140). Free -swell (ASTM D- 4546 Method B) tests were conducted to evaluate the potential for soil related heave. Results of the laboratory tests are presented on Plates 2 and 3. - 1 - Based on review of publicly available aerial imagery, the site appears to have been occupied since at least 1995. Within the depth drilled, subsurface conditions consisted of clayey sands over sands and weathered shale associated with the Upper Cretaceous Woodbine Formation. A combination of clayey sands and sands were encountered at the surface of the borings. These sandy soils were varying shades of brown and to in appearance, moderately plastic (SC) to nonplastic, fine-grained, loose to dense (relative consistency), and continued to depths of 19 to 25 feet below existing grades. It should be noted that Boring No, 2 was terminated within the sandy soils. varying concentrations of sand and iron staining, and extended through the termination depth of the boring. Ground water was encountered during drilling operations at a depth of 15 feet below existi grades and at the completion of drilling operations at depths of 9 to 10 feet. The presence a -iepth to ground water should be expected to change with seasonal rainfall. When prese ground water should be expected to perch above and within portions of the weathered shal Potential Vertical Movement Analysis Subsurface conditions at this site consist of clayey sand soils over weathered shale. I For clay soils, movements are associated with changes in seasonal moisture conditions. After periods of rain, the clays expand resulting in heave of overlying elements. During dry seasons, these soils shrink resulting in settlement of ground -supported features. In weathered shale, movements are associated with an increase in subsurface moisture after construction of the foundation, These movements are manifested as a gradual and sustained heave of the foundation. Potential movements associated with predominantly sandy sQils typmally manifest as settlement following application of new structural loads. These settlements generally occur during construction and complete at the time, or soon after, the full load has been transferred to the subgrade. Report No, 27444G May 19, 2025 Differential soil -related movements were evaluated using i• Method 124EI, results of t Standard Penetration Tests, results of the free -swell tests, and typical light loads for residenti construction. Based on this analysis, total differential soil -related movements for curre onditions are anticipated to be on the order of 1 to 1-1/2 inches, the estimated amount of PVM as well as other parameters provided in this report. No grading nveel4mkam final grades will be within 2 feet of existing grades and that all fill will be placed below the of the conclusions and recommendations provided in this report. It is anticipated that a ground -supported foundation will be used for structural support. Considering differential movements on the order of 1 to 1-1/2 inches, remedial earthwork is not considered necessary for this site. Recommendations for design and construction of the foundation are presented in the following sections. Current literature indicates 4 to 4-1/2 inches is the maximum amount of movement a grou supported, stiffened slab can withstand. Considering differential movements on the order of 1 1-1/2 inches, a ground supported, stiffened slab may be used if some post-constructi movement is acceptable. If no movement can be tolerated, a suspended floor coupled with a pi - ?.nd beam foundation should be used. Alternatively, remedial earthwork may be conduct 9 -1 ground -supported stiffened slab foundation. Design of post -tensioned slabs is based on the Edge Moisture Variation Distance (e.), and the anticipated Differential Movements (y,) that can occur over this distance e,,. The em is based on the amount of anticipated annual rainfall and is derived from the Thomthwaite Index (TI). This index is measured in inches and indicates the amount of rainfall above or below the amount needed to support plant growth. It has been found that irrigation and landscaping can increase the TI by several inches. For this project, a modified TI range of -10 to +10 was used. Differential movements (ym) for design of slabs can be determined according to the loo= Tensioning Institute (PTI)4.
