SUBJECT: PURCHASE OF FORENSIC SOFTWARE FOR THE POLICE
DEPARTMENT
RECOMMENDATION: City Council to consider approval for the purchase of the annual license
renewal of forensic software from Magnet Forensics for the Police
Department.
FUNDING SOURCE: Funds are available in the CCPD Fund for a total amount not to exceed
$18,620.
BACKGROUND: This request is for the annual license renewal of computer and cell phone
forensics software used by the department. This software is essential for
conducting forensic examinations of cellphones, including the ability to
lawfully bypass locked devices when necessary.
Given that many investigations rely on cellular evidence, maintaining
access to this capability is crucial. Without it, the department's ability to
conduct thorough investigations and resolve crimes would be significantly
delayed and hindered.
This procurement will be conducted in compliance with Local Government
Code Chapter 252, Subchapter B, § 252.022, which covers general
exemptions for personal, professional, or planning services.
Staff recommends approval.
