Often these canopies are to be used at car dealerships or for covered parking at a business. These structures shall be classified as S3, S4, or U1 occupancies in accordance with Chapter 3 of the 1994 Building Code. Allowable areas, building separation, distance from property lines, and roof covering materials shall comply with the appropriate section of the code. If the materials for the canopies is consistent with Appendix Chapter 31 for membrane structures, these provisions may be used as an alternate method. This will allow the use of a membrane that does not necessarily meet the roof re covering requirements.
