Call to Order The Grapevine Senior Citizens Advisory Board met at 3:35 PM on October 2, 2012 at the Grapevine Senior Activities Center. The following members were present: Joetta King, Ex-offico, Housing Authority Dick Guckel, Chairperson Kay Blanding Tena Burrell, Co-Chairperson Roy Stewart, City Council Member Liaison Francia Arrigan, Ex-offico, GRACE Pam Price Carey Miller Paul Eamst Charles Burns Others present: Trent Kelley, Senior Activities Center Director Megan Atkins, Recreation Specialist: Senior Activities Center Those not present: Vicki Yarnell, GRACE 2. Welcome Guests Marty Sabota- Reporter for Star-Telegram 3. Consideration of minutes for August 7, 2012 meeting Approved 4. Citizen Requests Kay Blanding- Senior Jamboree at Hurst Senior Center was really nice, and GRACE helped serve food. 5. New Business a. Joetta King-Housing Authority 1 Construction Projects that will begin soon include: 1. Increase in parking spaces, sidewalks and a dumpster pad at Texas and Starnes/Barnes units 2. Two cottonwood trees and a dead Silver Maple tree have been removed and more desirable species planted. 3. Replacement of siding with Hardie Plank, installation of new gutters, addition of insulation and turbines,wrapping beams on a few buildings, and painting railing 4. GHA office is having some remodeling done to provide better access during residential meetings and office space for Section 8 personnel. 5. A property survey is being done for all GHA properties (prompted by a property line dispute between First Methodist Church and GHA concerning a tree that needs to be removed between the two properties.) City of Grapevine thinks it is GHA property so they are having the land surveyed. Other: • No vacancies in the units • GHA adopted a bedbug prevention and elimination policy and distributed bedbug awareness and prevention information to residents -They are treating with an exterminator; all items to be removed and sheets to be washed. There are specific instructions to all units on what to do for the situation. -There is evidence of bedbugs with one resident and the furniture they brought in. -4 units which is 1 building that is being treated(expense is about$3000 to treat units) - Items are to be put on front porch, and provided bags for laundry. -First time for bedbug problem • There is a Grapevine Senior Citizen who has been complaining about not having low income facilities and the food at the SAC. She lives in an apartment complex in Grapevine and paying over$1000 a month and is looking for less than$500 monthly fees. She is on the waiting list for the GHA. The food at the SAC just depends on the day, there are good and bad days though at a reasonable donation price of$2. • The attrition rate for a unit at GHA is 10 units per year. b. Francia Arrigan-GRACE -Saturday October 13 having Annual Awards and Ken Thompson is being recognized. About 700-800 guests come; silent auction which helps feed the GRACE programs. -Start collection coupons for the holidays, can use food and turkeys. Information sent in newsletters about coupons from Tom Thumb and other stores,people can bring them to GRACE as it is money for them. GRACE is starting to prepare for 2000 plus children, 700 plus families and 1200 meals with baskets. Last year for Christmas GRACE provided 2000 plus meals and baskets for the families. There are coupon forms for each family to fill out 1 for Thanksgiving and 1 for Christmas. Only needs to go one time to GRACE then they will be assigned a date and time to come pick up the baskets of food 2 for the holidays if they qualify through GRACE. There are about 40 family walk-ups as well. -Provided information about the Transportation with United Way. Francia provided a spreadsheet that has all the different options for transportation and who can provide what and where and when in the Tarrant County. The best way to obtain the information is to call 211 as they will assist you with the best agency to provide you with your needs. Catholic Charities took over and will be providing the spreadsheet online. Just remind anyone with questions to direct them to 211 as the Public Transit of Tarrant County is helping people for the need of transportation. -As of September 2012 services given to 119 seniors in 96 households which totaled$6308. -GRACE has a total of 1039 individuals,457 families receiving 3474 services totaling of$36,980 for the year. -A big number of new clients came from the Back to School Fair. There were 870 plus school packages and 800 clothing items given away to the clients at the Fair. -GRACE received a grant for rent assistance for Grapevine residents up to 12 months. c. Carey Miller -Empowering Seniors Expo is first Friday on October 5. 1200 people have registered. There will be flu shots, checkups, door prizes,entertainment,many other free clinics, demonstrations and fellowship. There will be a Grapevine Chamber and Senior booth at the event. (Tena) Senior Law Enforcement Fraud Conference has fallen through but there will be a seminar on Fraud at the Expo. d. Roy Stewart -City Council meeting tonight at 5 pm will be talking about the design/modification of the CAC/SAC expansion that is in process. Also are working on new public safety building. These two items will be on the ballot to vote in November. Just wants people to give thought to these two items. -West Nile Virus? (Trent)there have been cases in Grapevine but no deaths. Parks and recreation staff have been monitoring cases, at this time of season the cases have been dropping off. -Also would like to be put first on the agenda due to City Council meeting same night. e. Trent Kelley - SAC -State Fair Trips on Thursdays October 3, 11 and 18, all trips are full with stand bys. -Jamboree in Hurst had over 500 seniors;there were games,booths and food. Grapevine will host next year's 2013 jamboree. 3 -October 9 last day to register to vote, early voting starts October 22. CAC/SAC expansion as well as the Public Safety Building will be on same ballot. -Empowering Seniors is this Friday October 5, will be taking 27 seniors over there. -Flu Shot Clinic is Friday October 12, $31.99 or Medicare Card is free. -Greek Festival on Friday October 12 -Dead Sea Scrolls is on October 16 -Dance is October 20 "Oil Rigs and Country Digs" at CAC from 7-9:30pm. The dances are at random times as it is a big event and going for quality. Dance is $5 at the door with food, band and entertainment. They are not conflicting with other center dances since they are on Saturday nights. 6. The meeting adj ourned at 4:3 5 pm.
