''IN P 164'• This house was constructed in 1958 for W. C. (Bill) Johnson and Dorothy Harwell Johnson as their family residence. The Johnsons had two children, Clyde and Mary Lou. Bill Johnson was a local plumber and his wife Dorothy was a registered nurse. Dorothy opened the first nursing home in Grapevine with the assistance of Dr. Ed Lancaster. Dorothy's parents helped to found the Assembly of God Church across the street from the house at the site of the present Teamsters Hall. This church later relocated to West Wall Street and is now known as Abundant Life Church. Dorothy Johnson occupied the house until she moved into a nursing care facility. The house was sold upon her death in 1998. This modest house is built in the minimal traditional style on a pier and beam foundation with wood frame, Masonite siding, asphalt shingle roof with exposed rafter tails. Staff review of the house indicates that while the Johnson's contributions are significant to the history of Grapevine's development the house itself is not of architectural significance. The house is in average condition and could be rehabilitated. A letter has been received from the applicant showing hardship to adapt the home for his family needs. The applicant submitted CA07-33 for demolition of the existing house and proposed plans for a new single-family residence for the site. Staff has recommended approval of the Historic Overlay HL07-03 to record the history of the Johnson's contribution to Grapevine and to allow the Commission to have input in the development of the proposed new home for this site. Proposed design guidelines are attached. By FRANCES CORBIN GOAD WILLIAM THOMAS HARWELL William Thomas Harwell was born November 11, 1891 in Waxahachie, Texas. His parents were E.A. and Addie Harwell and he was the oldest of five children. The family moved to Clyde, Texas and at thea e of nine he became "the man of the house" when his father died leaving a widow and small chil- dren. He spent his early years helping his mother operate the farm and raise the younger children. As a young man he heard many stories about his grandfather, "Turkey Jim" Harwell in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The stories influenced the young man and after helping to break horses, he also helped to drive herds of wild horses across the state, sometimes to very inclement weather. W.T. married Mary Alice Moore at Fort Worth, Texas on October 12, 1912. They made their home on a farm in Dallas County for the next few years where eight of their children were born. Ethyl was born in 1913, William, who died at an early age, was born in 1915, Dorothy in 1917, Ersie May in 1920, Leon in 1923, Annie in 1926, Albert in 1928 and T.A. in 1930. In I931, W.T. moved his family to a farm northwest of Grapevine which is now known as McPherson 's Slough at Grapevine Lake. Another daughter was born in 1932, Lois Jean. During the early years on the farm on Lonesome Dove Road, there was no electricity and only one telephone at John McPherson's. These were the depression years and raising a family of eight on sandy land was not easy but W.T. was a good manager and the family had a good living. He took his produce to Dallas and Fort Worth. During the early forties he bought the Cole Brothers Nursery and Fruit farm and increased his crops to include peanut farming and was very successful. At this time he built a second home on the Cole farm and he and Alice retired. Alice died in 1971 at the age of 82 and W.T. was killed in an accident in 1973 at the age of 81 while crossing Highway 114 at Dove Rd. He had just delivered some vegetables to a sister in law, Mrs. Nellie Mooney. All of the Harwell children live in Grapevine. Ethyl and Bob Gaskill have two children, Wilburn and Bobby. Dorothy mar- ried Bill Johnson and they have two children, Clyde and Mary Lou. Ersie Mae and A.C. "Abe" Johnson have five children, Margaret, Margie, Willia Mae, A.C., Jr., and Gayle. Leon mar- ried lean Wedde) and they have three children, Patsy, David and Peggy, Annie and Tommie Hamm have four children, Linda, Janet, Barbara and Mark. Albert married Bettie J. This is a history of a lady by the name of Dorothy Ilar well Johnson? Dorothy had worked around nursing care and hospitals. She also saw the need for extended care for people that were not able to care for themselves. The following is a story of the founding of the first Nursing- Care Center in Grapevine. On the 30th day of November in 1900 the first Convalescent Home in Grapevine was started. Appropriately it was called the Grapevine Convalescent Home. This home was founded in a house at 405 Church ;Streetand consisted of 9 beds. Dorothy Johnson and Esther Dalton „-ere the owners and operators of the first Nursing Home in Grapevine. These two ladies were en- couraged and had the financial and medical assistance of Dr. E.L. Lancaster „ ho is still a practicing physician in Grapevine. Through encouragement and a demand for a larger facility the two founders decided to expand their operation. On June 24. 1961 Dorothy and Esther leased a larger house at 414 North Main Street, which would accommodate I 1 beds,' In 1962 they expanded and added 9 more beds. This facility was licensed by State of Texas as the Dalton & Johnson Nursing Home. The State classification was a Type I Home and remained and oper- ated as such until 1963. It was changed to a Type II Home in 1963. In the beginning patient care allowance ,vas $71 to $150 per month and then upon reclassification gas increased from $122.00 to $175.00 per month by the State. On October 25, 1965 Brookhollow Manor Nursing Home was built and opened with Dr. Glenn Hopkins, V.R. Shurmon and Carl Williams (the builder) as owners. Dorothy Johnson was the Administrator. This was originally a 50 bed home but three months later it was expanded to a 75 bed home, both Type IV and Type III. On January 1, 1972: ownership was changed with Zana Mae Davis as the new Administrator. Many additions have been made. A large modern living room and activities room was added. Many of the Staff at Brookhollow Manor have been employed there since it was built. There are two other Nursing Homes in Grapevine. Aubrey Smith, an old timer here bought the Nursing Home at 414 North Main Street in 1966. He first ran the 28 bed facility licensed as a Type III Home until 1967, when he added eight more beds. it operates today as a 36 bed Type III Nursing Home. Then in 1975 the Grapevine Nursing Home of 142 beds was built and today operates as a Type III Home. It is interesting to see that when Nursing Homes first started they received from $71.00 to $150.00 per month, today Nursing Homes receive from $625.00 to $740.00 per month. Times do change. By ZANA MAE DAVIS r NUO]WAII Optometry had its formal beginning in the state of Texas in 1922 when the state legislature passed the Optometry Law regu- lating the practice of Optometry. According to Mrs. Starr Frank (age 80), Mrs. Elwood Cluck (age 81) and Mrs. Joe Lipscomb (age 65), there were no opto- rnctrists practicing in Grapevine between 1913 and 1935. Before 1935, the residents of Grapevine went to Dallas and Fort Worth for visual care and many times got there by train or jitney. Also it was not uncommon in those days for people to go to a 5 and 10 cent more, where they themselves would select the lenses from an assortment which made them see the best. Mrs. Frank did recall a jeweler, named Hall, who dispensed lenses in Grapevine from written prescriptions about 1913. Also, r.tn optician named Albert F. Woods, who was the pater- nal uncle of Dr. Ira F. Woods, examined eyes and fitted glasses in Gra )ovine between 1905 and 1913. In 135, a Dr. J.A. Metlock had a one day a week practice in Austin's Drug Store, which was located ort the west side of Main Street near the intersection of Main and Franklin Streets, It is believed that Dr. Metlock practiced in Grapevine for a year or so. In 1951, Dr. William E. Spain, a 1948 araduate of the N-tassa, chusetts College of Optometry, set up practice in Grapevine at the corner of North Main and Northwest Highway. Because Grapevine was so small at the time, he was there on Thursda),s only and ,,vas assisted in getting his practice started by Dr. Wm, Wilkerson, a dentist, who practiced in the same building as Dr. Spain and by Roy Chambers, ,yho at the time owned the Citt Drug Store. These two men had encouraged Dr. Spain to star',, the practice because there ,yss no optometric care available in Grapevine at the time. Dr. Spain practiced in Grapevine until 1956, after which he started a practice in Arlington. Texas „here he is still practicing at this time. 1978. y ` Dr. Ira E. Woods was a dedicated pioneer in the practice of optometry. being one of the first to be licensed under the then new Texas Optometry Law in 1922. He „as born near Jacks. boro, Texas in 1901 and attended the South Bend Indiana Col. lege of Optics and the Needles Institute about 1920. In 1951, he was appointed to the Texas State Board of Exam. iners in Optometry and became president of the board in 1959, He continued in that office until his death in 1969. Dr. Woods also had served as president of the Texas Opto. metric Association about 1950, and while living in Grapevine served as Mayor from 1963 until 1969. He was selected for the D.E. Box Citizen of the Year Award in 1964. Dr. Woods had practiced in Littlefield, Texas from 1931 to 1955 when he retired from active practice there and moved to Grapevine. After about a year of living in Grapevine he started a practice in October of 1956 at 338 Main Street next to the old First National Bank Building. In 1961 Dr. Woods was joined by a partner, Dr. Don T. Ger- schick, who had been in private practice in Houston, Texas and also had been a clinical instructor in contact lens fitting at the University of Houston. Dr. Gerschick was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1928, raised in Dallas, attended the University of Houston and gradu- ated receiving a Doctor of Optometry degree in 1960. While living in Grapevine, Dr. Gerschick served on the origi. nal steering committee for the Tarrant County Junior College, served two times as President of the Chamber of Commerce, was selected as a director of the First National Bank of Grape- vine in 1972 and in 1973 was awarded the D.E. Box Citizen of the Year Award. These two men practiced under the style of Drs. Woods and Gerschick until 1969, when they dissolved their partnership and Dr. Gerschick set up a practice at a new location at 308 Main Street. Dr. Tom L. Chandler was born in McKinney, Texas on April 19, 1944. He attended the University of Houston and graduated with a Doctor of Optometry degree in 1968. After graduation, he practiced for one year in McKinney, Texas before moving to Grapevine in 1969 to take over the practice of the then recently deceased Dr. Ira E. Woods. He and Dr. Woods had originally planned to form a partner, ship, but it was not consummated due to the sudden unexpected death of Dr. Woods. Dr. Chandler served as President of the North Texas Optometric Association in 1975, President of the Grapevine Lion's Club in 1974 and as Vice President of the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce in 1977-1978, lie is still tri practice in Grapevine at the time of this writing. In 1977, Dr. Gerschick moved his practice to a newly remod• eled location at 113 Main Street and is still in practice in Gra pevine at the time of this writing. By DR. DON T.
