FROM: BRUNO RUMBELOW, CITY MANAGER C)
MEETING DATE: FEBRUARY 17, 2009
SUBJECT: CONSIDER APPROVAL OF A RESOLUTION FOR THE
DONATION OF COMPUTERS TO THE CHICO INDEPENDENT
SCHOOL DISTRICT
RECOMMENDATION:
City Council to consider a resolution for the donation of 26 Pentium 3 Dell Computers
and associated hardware to the Chico Independent School District. Please see the
attached letter from the Chico Independent School District regarding the proposed
donation.
BACKGROUND:
The City of Grapevine Information Technology Department currently has 26 Pentium 3
Dell Computers and associated hardware. The computers and associated hardware are
no longer needed in the Department operations and the City Council authorized their
replacement through budget approvals.
The City has recently received a request from the Chico Independent School District for
a donation of the computers and associated hardware. A copy of the request is attached
for review. To be used by other departments, the computers would have to be re-
configured at an additional cost to the City. The Chico Independent School District will
use the equipment in their middle school classes.
Surplus computers would normally be sold at auction. Historically, technology equipment
has sold for very little value at auction. During recent auctions the City received an
average of$40.00 per computer sold.
Because of the low value of this type of equipment sold at auction, Staff believes the
equipment would have more value in goodwill by granting the Chico Independent School
District's request and donating the equipment to their program.
Staff recommends approval of the request to donate the computers and associated
hardware to the Chico Independent School District.
