FROM: BRUNO RUMBELOW, CITY MANAGER
MEETING DATE: FEBRUARY 21, 2012
SUBJECT: APPROVAL TO PURCHASE FERTILIZER FROM BWI
COMPANIES, INC. FOR THE CITY MUNICIPAL GOLF COURSE
RECOMMENDATION:
City Council to consider approval to purchase 28 tons of fertilizer from BWI Companies,
Inc. for the City Municipal Golf Course.
FUNDING SOURCE:
Funds for this purchase are available in account 210-42205-340-2 (Lake Enterprise
Fund/ Grounds Maintenance/ Golf Course Maintenance) in the amount of$36,008.00.
BACKGROUND:
Quotes were taken in accordance with City Purchasing Policy. Formal bids and
advertisements are not required for purchases under $50,000. Three vendors submitted
quotations. A copy of the quote tabulation listing all pricing received is attached for
review.
This purchase is for 28 tons of a 35-0-5 fertilizer to fertilize the entire golf course except
for greens. This fertilizer is a season long, slow release type, which will be applied one
time, and will replace our normal practice of applying fertilizer three times per season. It
also contains our spring pre-emergent weed control which we normally spray. The
benefits of using this product, from a grass growing perspective, is it provides a steady
supply of what the grass needs throughout the season. From an operational standpoint,
it reduces the labor required to apply from three times to one and eliminates the
spraying of spring pre-emergent which required two men for two weeks to complete.
This will result in the reduction time that parts of the course would have to be closed
while applications were made along with the cost savings in labor.
Of the three quotes received, BWI Companies, Inc. submitted the lowest quote. BWI
Companies, Inc. has provided like product in the past to the City with satisfactory results.
Staff recommends approval.
